At Talent X20, Brett Clemenson—founder of ALRA, Australia’s largest recruitment agency, and host of The Loan Recruiter Podcast—delivered a high-impact session on “The Mindset of a $1M Biller.” Speaking from experience as a top biller managing multiple health conditions including Type 1 diabetes, coeliac disease, and ADD, Clemenson offered a deeply practical and personal blueprint for success in recruitment. His core message was clear: mindset is the ultimate differentiator for those who reach the top 1% in billing performance.
Clemenson’s strategy revolves around three key pillars: setting up for success, energy awareness, and building resilience. He emphasised the importance of foundational health habits—such as getting eight hours of sleep, drinking two litres of water a day, and taking regular walks. These simple routines form the bedrock of consistent performance. Just as vital is a professional home office setup and, perhaps most critically, a firm belief in one’s potential to achieve million-dollar billing—often fuelled by a healthy blend of ambition and ego.
The second pillar, energy awareness, focused on what Clemenson called “calendar hacking”. He encouraged recruiters to align their schedules with their personal energy peaks—tackling high-energy tasks like cold calls during their most alert hours, and saving lower-energy tasks like sending InMails for quieter moments. This strategy is especially helpful for introverts, who may feel drained after intense social interaction and benefit from deliberate energy conservation throughout the day.
Clemenson’s third and most powerful pillar was resilience. Drawing comparisons with elite athletes, he explained that top performers rebound from setbacks quickly and effectively. His personal “two-more-deals” method—taking immediate action after disappointment—keeps momentum flowing and prevents spiralling. He also referenced Ryan Serhant’s technique of “delaying emotions” until the end of the day to maintain clarity and productivity during tough moments. Importantly, Clemenson reframed adversity not as failure but as evidence of forward motion, sharing how challenges often intensify just before major breakthroughs.
While acknowledging the value of KPIs and AI in streamlining recruitment processes, Clemenson insisted that mindset remains the core driver of long-term success. His talk was a compelling reminder that top-tier recruiters aren’t just systems-driven—they’re resilient, intentional, and disciplined in both mind and body. For agency recruiters aiming to elevate their performance, his advice offers a practical roadmap for cultivating excellence and reaching the coveted million-dollar milestone.
